What a class is like
Every class follows the same shape, so a first visit has no surprises.
Students line up by sash, bow to the teacher and to each other, and the class begins.
Joints, stances and footwork at an easy pace. A teacher shows how to scale each move.
A hand form or a staff form, then short drills in pairs. Students at different sashes work side by side.
A short cool-down, a few words from the teacher and a bow. Parents wait on the bench by the door.
The performance group
Students ages 12 and up who want to learn the lion, the drum and the cymbals practice on Tuesday and Saturday, and show what they have learned at neighborhood events through the winter season.
Two dancers move as one lion: one carries the head and one follows at the back. It begins with the stances students already learn in class.
Learned in pairs
Stances from class carry over
The drummer sets the pace and the cymbals and gong follow it. Learning to listen to the drum comes before learning to dance.
Timing before steps
Open to students who do not dance
Short hand forms and staff forms, shown one at a time with the coach announcing each one. Students choose a form they have practiced in class.

Teachers
Two teachers share the week, and both teach in English and in Vietnamese.

Head instructor and owner
Nghia opened the school, teaches the teen and adult classes and leads the lion dance team. He speaks English and Vietnamese. Ask him about his own training and who taught him.

Instructor, juniors and staff
Khue teaches the juniors' class, the forms and staff class and the Saturday family class. She speaks English and Vietnamese, and she is the first teacher most new families meet.
Questions
Juniors start at age 7. Teens train from 12 to 17, and adult classes are for ages 18 and up. The Saturday family class is for students 7 and up with a parent.

Yes. Parents and anyone thinking of joining can sit on the bench by the door and watch.
We bow in, warm up, practice a form, drill with a partner and bow out. Warm-ups are at an easy pace, and every fitness level starts here.
A student tests for the next sash when the instructor sees the skills. Every student moves at their own pace.
