Questions
Before your first class
How old do I have to be?
Juniors start at age 7. Teens train from 12 to 17, and adult classes are for ages 18 and up. The Saturday family class is for students 7 and up with a parent.
Can I watch a class first?
Yes. Parents and anyone thinking of joining can sit on the bench by the door and watch.
What do I wear to the first class?
A plain t-shirt and loose pants. Take off jewelry, tie long hair back and leave shoes off the floor. A uniform comes when you join.
What is a class like?
We bow in, warm up, practice a form, drill with a partner and bow out. Warm-ups are at an easy pace and a teacher shows how to scale each move, so every fitness level starts here.
Can adults and children train together?
On Saturday morning, yes: the family class takes a parent and a child, ages 7 and up, side by side. Other classes are split by age.
How do sashes work?
A student tests for the next sash when the instructor sees the skills, at a sash test. Every student moves at their own pace. The sash path page lists what each color works on.
What are forms and weapons?
A form is a set pattern of stances, strikes and kicks practiced alone, like a sentence of movement. Weapons start with the wooden staff at green sash, in their own class with a teacher in the room.
How does tuition work?
Tuition is set by the program and the classes a week. The figures are on the enrollment page, and the front desk goes through them with you. The how tuition works page has the details.
What is the term, and how do I stop?
Your first term is three months, then tuition runs month to month. To stop, tell us in writing and give 30 days' notice. Ask us how to pause for travel or an injury.
What if I miss a class?
Come to another class for your age group that week, or tell the front desk if you need to pause for travel, illness or an injury.
Still have a question?
Send a message, or book a class and ask at the door.
